Walking at Aroha

Aroha Island is a natural haven with a wide diversity of New Zealand flora and fauna. If you love nature and have a desire to explore the unique plants and birds of New Zealand, you will enjoy the tours on offer.

Seven hectares of mangroves and hectares of basalt eruptions from the Rangitane volcano have formed this beautiful peninsula. North Island Brown Kiwi live on the island and they sometimes can be heard at night.

Guided Kiwi Walks commence shortly after sunset and are preceded by a brief introduction and short DVD.   Walks may last up to two hours.   There is a chance of seeing kiwi in their natural habitat.

All participants must have red night light – or suitable red cellophane covered torches.   No spot lights of any sort and no cameras.   Torches and appropriate covers can be provided.

It helps if you do not wear perfume and that your warm clothing is not noisy e.g. nylon parkas etc.   Cotton and wool are more suitable.   Sensible walking shoes are a must and please check the weather forecast before making your booking.

The front gate is closed at 5.30 p.m.   When making your booking the caretakers will advise you of the correct procedure for entry.

For the purpose of kiwi monitoring and the need to reduce stress during the mating season, there will be no guided kiwi walks during the months of August, September & October.
On all other occasions, we recommend you contact our caretakers to check walk availability as walks can sometimes be cancelled because of weather conditions.

Kiwi Night Walk $35/person.  Maximum 2 hours and 4 people.  (Pro rata increase in fee if less than 4 people). All fees must be paid on arrival.
